COUNTY NEWS RELEASE
Considering the impact on the swimming community during the Olympic Pool Re-plastering Project, Los Alamos County staff have been communicating with the local and regional pools to secure an alternative space during the closure of Olympic and Therapy Pools, February 22, 2026, through October 2026. The Los Alamos County Community Services Department is happy to announce that it has secured a lease for the Piñon Pool, located in White Rock.
The Piñon Pool Association previously ran Piñon Pool; however, they closed the facility in 2025 due to a lack of memberships. Los Alamos County reached out to the owner of the property, Attack Research, with a proposal to operate the pool from May 2026 to October 2026.
Over the course of the next couple of months, County staff will be working to reopen the facility, including site clean-up and ensuring equipment starts up and functions properly, in order to open to the public in May.
Piñon Pool will operate similarly to the Main Olympic Pool, with hours from 6:00am – 7:00pm Monday through Friday, and 9:00am – 5:00pm on Saturdays. A more detailed schedule will be available on the Aquatic Center webpage as the pool gets closer to opening. The pool will be open to the public, and Aquatic Center pass holders can also utilize the facility.
During the closure, the Leisure Lagoon will remain open, with the planned schedule beginning February 23, 2026, as follows, with the possibility of expanding current Saturday hours:
Monday, Wednesday, Friday
– 9:00am – 11:00am Fitness Classes
– 11:00am – 7:00pm General Public and Swim Lessons
Tuesday and Thursday
– 9:00am – 7:00pm General Public and Swim Lessons
Saturday
-12:00pm – 3:00pm General Public
While this lease does not provide an opportunity for indoor swimming, it does provide another venue for the summer season. We understand that this news might not meet the needs of all swimmers. Staff would like the community to know that every effort was made locally and regionally to find solutions to minimize this impact on our community.
