A student-organized “Peaceful ICE Walkout” to take place Friday at 1 p.m., that includes a march from Los Alamos High School to Ashley Pond, is not a school-sanctioned event.

An email from LAHS states that administration recently became aware that students are circulating a flyer encouraging peers to participate in a protest later this week.

“This is not a school sanctioned event. We respect and value student voice. Civc engagement and thoughtful expression are important parts of learning. We encourage families to talk with their students about current events and things happening across the country and around the world,” the email states.

It goes on to say that the district has a responsibility to account for all students during the school day and report any students who are not in class as absent and that students leaving campus without permission create potential safety risks.

“Any student who leaves campus or walks out of class during the school day will be marked with an unexcused absence and will have appropriate school consequences,” the email states. “Students who wish to express their views are encouraged to do so in ways that do not disrupt instruction or compromise student safety.”

A student sent the above flyers to local media. LAHS is not hosting the walkout as reported elsewhere.
