LTE: Disposition Of Los Alamos School Of Gymnastics Building On North Mesa

BY LOUI JANECKY
LASG Director and

MILES BEAUX
LASG board president

We are receiving many calls from members of the community about the disposition of our building (Los Alamos School of Gymnastics) on North Mesa. We are hearing from both children’s and adult groups – recreational activities, from sports to arts and crafts type ventures. We are also receiving calls from  social groups looking for a place to meet and a few people who have private businesses needing space. Many people are interested in renting or buying all or part of our indoor space.

As we do not own the land under our building, (Los Alamos County does and we have nearly 2 more years lease on it),it makes selling or renting our building a bit complicated. At present we are talking with community leaders on council, parks and rec, and others about the possible purchase of the building. The County has considered the idea of a multipurpose gym with rental space for reserved time blocks. We also have been in discussions with people who would like to buy and move the building to the valley. Though we would prefer to sell the building to someone who will use it for Los Alamos activities, we do not own the land under it and that dictates our choices. If you have an interest in the future of the facility please talk to your community leaders, parks and rec, county staff and county council about your wishes. Let them know how you feel. Make your voice heard before it gets torn down for parking.

LASG is a 50 year old 501c3 nonprofit organization. After we sell the building, all of the organization’s debts will be paid off and the remaining funds will be put into endowment college scholarships. The money belongs to the children.
