A cuclist received minor injuries Thursday afternoon when she was struck by a car in the roundabout on Diamond Drive in Los Alamos as she was traveling from Barranca Mesa to North Mesa Road at around 4:30 p.m.

A report filed by Los Alamos Police Department Cpl. Jose T. Garcia, states that when he arrived at Diamond and San Ildefonso Road, he observed a vehicle parked in the road with slight damage to the left front bumper and inner splash shield. He then noticed a bicyle resting on the sidewalk with slight damage to the rear wheel and what would be the swing arm.

The driver of the car told Cpl. Garcia that when she was attempting to enter San Ildefonso Road, she observed a male cyclist and continued driving, not seeing the second cyclist, resulting in her striking the female cyclist.

The cyclist said she saw the car entering at the same time and tried to travel into the left part of the lane in an attempt to avoid being struck by the car, but was unable to avoid contact. Cpl. Garcia’s report says that based on statements from the driver and the cyclist, it appeared that the driver was focused on the male cyclist and did not see the female cyclist in the intersection and in close proximity. Cpl. Garcia said he observed some 13 feet of skid marks from the car, an indication that the driver attempted to avoid the contact but could not.

Cpl. Garcia said the bicyclist received minor injuries and refused to be transported to Los Alamos Medical Center. The driver was evaluated by medics and checked out okay. No citations were issued.
