2026-2028 NMAA Classification And Alignment Changes Announced For LAHS Athletics

LAPS NEWS RELEASE

The New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA) classification and alignment for the 2026-2027 and 2027-2028 school years has brought a few changes to the Los Alamos High School athletics schedules.

LAHS football is competing in District 1-5A, along with Capital High School, Cibola High School, Highland High School, Los Lunas High School, Miyamura High School, Piedra Vista High School and Santa Fe High School.

“Over the last few years Hilltopper football has proven to be one of the best teams in the state,” stated Athletic Director Guy Meyer. “Coach Williams and company will continue to strive for excellence in our new-look District 1-5A.”

LAHS remains in District 2-4A for other sports, along with Espanola Valley High School,Moriarty High School and Taos High School.

“While we will miss competing with Pojoaque Valley High School in district contests, we are excited to move forward with the updated NMAA 2-4A district alignment,” Meyer said. “We value our neighbors Espanola Valley, Taos and Moriarty as district opponents and will do our best to schedule PVHS in as many non-district games as possible.”

The NMAA Classification and Alignment system determines high school sports divisions and districts in New Mexico based on student enrollment (grades 9-12), with a 1.3 multiplier for private schools, creating different class structures for various sports like football (6A-6Man) and baseball (5A-A), with recent updates for the 2026-2028 block introducing shifts for schools like Santa Fe High moving to 5A, and new district formations to balance competition and travel. Now that the classifications and alignments have been finalized, staff are determining sports contests and schedules for the upcoming seasons.
