COUNTY NEWS RELEASE
With high hopes for a snowy ski season at Pajarito Mountain, the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities (DPU) previously shortened closures on Camp May Road during the holidays. Unfortunately, the mountain is still too dry for skiing, and as such, the road closure schedule is being adjusted again to take advantage of the favorable weather conditions for construction.
Camp May Road and Camp May will be closed through 5 p.m. Wednesday this week. They will be open Thursday through Sunday. Starting Monday, January 5, Camp May Road will be closed Monday through Thursday for two more weeks until Friday, January 16, at which time the closures should be complete for now.
The road closures, which began in April 2025, are necessary under the regional Jemez Mountain Fire Protection Project (JMFPP). This project includes installation of waterlines and conduit for electric and fiber lines up to Pajarito Mountain.
Waterline and conduit installations are expected to be finished by January 19. In the spring and early summer, DPU plans to complete the project with the installation and connection of electric and fiber manholes, vaults and boxes. Paving operations to restore Camp May Road will also resume in the spring.
DPU’s contractor, DUB-L-EE, is conducting the work on Camp May Road and Pajarito Mountain.
