PEEC NEWS RELEASE

The Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) is teaming up once again with the Los Alamos Public Library to support the Los Alamos Community Seed Library (LACSL) during this year’s winter seed drive. Community members are encouraged to donate seeds all winter long at either library location or at the Los Alamos Nature Center.

To kick off the season of giving, the LACSL will host a hands-on volunteer “sorting party” on Saturday, January 3, 2026, from 2 to 4 PM at the Los Alamos Nature Center, 2600 Canyon Rd. Admission is free, and no registration is required.

The Community Seed Library follows a simple and sustainable cycle: borrow, grow, return. Each spring, gardeners borrow seeds from the library’s collection, grow their plants through the season, and return harvested seeds in the fall. While the seed cabinets remain open year-round, winter is the crucial time when volunteers restock drawers and prepare for the official spring launch in March.

After seeds are donated, volunteers sort, clean, and repackage them into envelopes sized for the seed library drawers. Community members interested in helping with this process will have multiple opportunities to volunteer this winter:

Winter Sorting Parties
● Saturday, January 3 — 2 to 4 PM, Los Alamos Nature Center
● Saturday, February 7 — 2 to 4 PM, White Rock Branch Library

These gatherings offer a fun, hands-on way to meet fellow gardeners, learn from experienced seed stewards, and contribute directly to a beloved community resource. The event is free and open to all ages. No registration is required.
