The “2025 Annual Los Alamos CROP Hunger Walk and Turkey Trot” was held on a day with questionable weather, Sunday, November 23rd. Despite overnight snow, the 1.77 to 2.57 mile course had cleared by 2:00pm. About 90 enthusiastic people ran or walked it. Results of the runners’ times and places were published recently in this news source.
As of this writing, the total amount of money raised by the event stands at over $9,000. This is lower than past years, the cold weather getting in the way. Of the $9K, over $8,400 came in through the website (see link below) and around $1,300 was donated directly at the event, for a total so far of $9,600. People may still contribute to the cause—until the end of the year—by safely going online and paying with a credit card at this web address: https://events.crophungerwalk.org/losalamosnm.
Eradicating hunger around the world and in our community is the goal of a CROP Hunger Walk. People have been organizing these events all over the country since the 1970s. Los Alamos is no different: the annual Atomic City Runners’ Turkey Trot was combined with a CROP Hunger Walk many years ago and the event has been a tradition in this town for decades.
One quarter of the funds raised by the Los Alamos event goes to L. A. Cares, our local food pantry serving Los Alamos County residents in need. The remaining three-quarters of the funds is sent to a non-governmental organization (NGO) called Church World Service (CWS) which works to alleviate hunger and bring relief supplies to communities in need across our country and around the world. CWS has been in existence since the relief efforts at the end of the Second World War. They work in cooperation with many other NGO relief agencies across the globe.
Consider adding to this year’s total Los Alamos funds to alleviate hunger by using the above web address. And be sure to save the date for the 2026 Annual CROP Hunger Walk and Turkey Trot: Sunday, November 22. As always, it’s the Sunday before Thanksgiving.
