
LESC NEWS RELEASE
The Legislative Education Study Committee (LESC) will meet in Santa Fe November 19-21 at the State Capitol in Room 322. The three-day meeting will convene lawmakers and state officials to discuss ongoing public education initiatives.
Day 1 – November 19, 2025
LESC will first hear an update on the state’s recent changes to the public education funding formula as a result of House Bill 63 passed in the 2025 legislative session, and bilingual education programs in New Mexico.
Additional hearing items will include the National Conference of State Legislatures (NSCL) presenting state trends in education choice, and the Public Education Department (PED) providing school accreditation updates.
Day 2 – November 20, 2025
LESC hearings will continue with presentations on teacher preparation in the state’s traditional undergraduate programs, fiscal year (FY27) budget proposals, and potential endorsed legislation proposals ahead of the 2026 legislative session. PED will also provide lawmakers with updates on the state’s literacy and STEM institutes. Public comment will be held in the afternoon.
Closing Day – November 21, 2025
The committee meeting will conclude with a joint hearing with the Legislative Finance Committee (LFC) to discuss updates on public school capital outlay and the Martinez-Yazzie Action Plan. PED Cabinet Secretary, Mariana Padilla will provide remarks on the Martinez-Yazzie Action Plan.
