Los Alamos Public Schools Celebrate Student Achievement And Continued Focus On Growth

LAPS NEWS RELEASE

Los Alamos Public Schools (LAPS) is pleased to share that the school district continues to perform among the top districts in New Mexico and in the nation. Results from the 2024–2025 state assessments show that LAPS students are excelling across subjects, with proficiency rates substantially higher than statewide averages.

On the Spring 2025 assessments, LAPS students achieved 73.5% proficiency in Language Arts (compared to the state average of 43.5%), 59.0% proficiency in Math (compared to the state’s 24.8%), and 64.4% proficiency in Science (compared to the state’s 35.0%). LAPS is especially proud of the significant progress made in literacy, which saw proficiency grow by 6.5 percentage points from 2022 to 2025. This success is attributed to the district’s adoption of a curriculum that follows the Science of Reading, hiring certified reading specialists at every school, and training all elementary teachers in effective reading instruction and intervention strategies. Each school has a team of teachers who work collaboratively to support students who are not yet meeting grade-level benchmarks.

Math and Science remain important areas of focus. The district is currently reviewing a new math curriculum for implementation in the next school year, has implemented a new science curriculum in every school, and is entering its third year of providing extra math support at every school. These steps will help ensure that our students continue to build strong skills in every content area.

“We are proud of our students and staff for their hard work and dedication,” said
Supt. Jennifer Guy. “These results highlight the expertise and collaboration of our teachers, the support of our parents, and the shared commitment of our community to student success.”

This collective effort is reflected in numerous accolades. All seven Los Alamos schools continue to perform in the top level of schools in the state. Additionally, Piñon Elementary received a 2023-2024 Spark Change Award for the Highest Performance in Math among its Students with Disabilities. Los Alamos Middle School also achieved a 77.1% proficiency rate in Language Arts, reflecting a 9.6% increase over four years and ranking them #50 in the state for student achievement growth.

Individual student test score reports have been distributed to families. If you have questions or concerns about your child’s performance, please contact your teacher, principal, or school
counselor. If you need additional assistance, you are welcome to reach out to the district office directly.

LAPS thanks our outstanding community for your continued partnership and support.
