Diane Denish recently said, “National politics may dominate the headlines, but it’s your local school board that will shape the classrooms, teachers, and opportunities your children see every day.” Please vote Stephanie Galvez for District 1, Tamara Hinckley for District 2, and Bryan Fearey for the UNM-LA Advisory Board.
Our Council’s vote to increase Gross Receipts Taxes on Oct. 28, 2025, was terribly disappointing (with Councilor Reagor opposed). Does our County really believe that we can negatively impact the #1 economic driver for our town without devastating and harmful consequences? The majority of public comments, 73% of small business owners in a Chamber of Commerce survey, and LANL Director Dr. Thom Mason opposed the increase. Dr. Mason warned, “The projected increase to LANL is expected to be roughly $13.5 million a year, or $135 million over 10 years. This proposed increase will have a direct impact on future hiring and programmatic activity at the Laboratory.”
I predict that this tax increase will NOT generate the higher revenues our County is expecting. Residents, businesses, and LANL will adjust accordingly and cause further economic decline in Los Alamos.
Our Council may ignore the voices of the public, but November 4th is your opportunity to make your voice heard. Every vote counts!
Please mark your calendars for our Election Watch Party on Nov. 4, 7pm at Open Door and our Thanksgiving Potluck on Nov. 20, 6pm at Open Door (2101 Trinity Drive).
