Candidate For
School Board District 2
DiLet me start by stating emphatically, I AM NOT MOVING TO ST. LOUIS!
Sorry about the caps. I am not yelling at you. I just want to clarify the rumors about me. Today, I was asked by a friend if I am planning to move to St. Louis. This is news to me. I asked my husband of 39 years if he has plans to move to St. Louis? He said, “NO!” Okay, he answered in a more questioning voice and wondered why I would ask such a ridiculous question.
Regardless, the word around town (maybe just White Rock) is that I am moving to St. Louis. I am not sure how to address this lie. I am completely dumbfounded that someone felt the need to start spreading this lie. I am shocked, dismayed, and discouraged. I am also humbled. Perhaps it is because I am presenting myself as a viable candidate for the District 2 school board position?
I want to go on the record to state that I have no intention of moving anywhere. I grew up in White Rock. Other than my years away at college and the first five years of my married life, I have lived in White Rock. I love this town and I am devoted to it. I have worked for the Los Alamos Public Schools since 1997. I taught for 23 years within the district; first at Barranca and then at Chamisa (the school I attended as a child). Oh, that reminds me, I did spend the 1973-1974 school year in Darmstadt, Germany. My father took a sabbatical for a year and worked at GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research in Wixhausen, Germany. I want to be totally transparent and honest.
Since 2021, I have worked in the Business Department of LAPS. I retired January 2024, but was talked into coming back in September to help get the budgets completely entered and up-to-date. I am working one-quarter time and have fully trained my replacement. I will fully retire again October 31st, as I had promised my direct manager that I would stay to help get the budget and Fixed Asset reports ready for the auditors.
Since I will soon be completely retired, I will have plenty of time to help the school district as a member of the board. My desire to serve on the board is because I believe completely in the importance of education. I am devoted to Los Alamos and I want to do everything in my power to help the students of this county, and those from the surrounding areas also. I have supported LAPS throughout my career and I am not ready to stop supporting the district, the students, parents, teachers, and administration.
I believe that my work experiences make me the best candidate for the District 2 school board position. I have experience teaching and helping students of various academic strengths, ethnicity, and social-economic backgrounds. I worked closely with staff and parents to design and deliver lessons so that ALL my students would be successful. The knowledge that I gained while working for the Business Department is invaluable. I understand the various sources of school revenue and the requirements tied to the different funds. When I look at the financial reports submitted monthly in the board packet, I understand them and can ask meaningful questions.
To wrap up my long letter, do not believe the rumors! I am not going anywhere. I encourage all of my friends and neighbors in the District 2 area to vote for me. Early voting will start in White Rock on October 18th and the final day to vote is November 4th. Please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns at ElectTammy2025@gmail.com
Respectfully submitted,
Tamara “Tammy” Hinckley
P.S. If I ever decide to move away, it will not be to a large metropolis!
