PEEC NEWS RELEASE

Bird enthusiasts and nature lovers are encouraged to mark their calendars to participate in a day of discovery and community science. The Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) is hosting the local portion of the National Audubon Society’s 125th annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC), starting at 6:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, 2024.

The Christmas Bird Count, the longest-running community science project in the world, provides critical data used by ecologists and ornithologists to study bird populations and their responses to environmental changes, including climate shifts and disease impacts.

Participants will be divided into small teams led by local birding experts, spending the day outdoors identifying and counting every bird they can find in and around Los Alamos County.

No birding experience is necessary—just an eagerness to help and explore! Additionally, volunteers who prefer to stay indoors can report bird sightings from their feeders at home. Most teams will be hiking and spending significant time outside, so dress appropriately for the weather.

This is a free event, and all ages are welcome to join.

To be part of this important conservation effort, contact Mouser Williams at mouser@mouser.org to be placed on a team that matches your birding skill level and desired level of physical activity. Don’t miss this opportunity to contribute to bird conservation and enjoy the beauty of local local wildlife!
