LTE: Denise Derkacs Has My Vote

BY RICHARD MAH

My name is Richard Mah. I retired from Los Alamos National Laboratory as an Associate Laboratory Director under University of California management. I also served as the Acquisition Manager for the successful bid by Los Alamos National Security, LLC, which included UC, to assume management of the Laboratory contract in 2006.

Denise Derkacs was my Chief of Staff at the Laboratory during my time as Associate Laboratory Director, and before that as Division Leader and as Group Leader. She also worked with me on the successful LANS proposal. She was always knowledgeable, prepared, diligent, and honest and contributed to the successful bid. She was definitely a valued member of the team.

Election time is upon us, and getting the right things done is very important for our community. Candidates will always tell you of their dreams and opinions. But how are they going to get things done? Elected officials actually have to know and understand the system, and to study and prepare to get things done for the community.

Everyone should do their research before voting. The Voter Guide published by the League of Women Voters is an excellent source of information with the actual words from the candidates on their positions. Note statements from candidates containing negative comments and/or pipe dreams, followed by a list of actions they will take, without any apparent understanding of procedures or consequences. Denise, as current Council Chair, merely explained her record, her positions, and how she plans to implement her goals. If you want something done in public office, there are no tricks, gimmicks, or magic wands. Public service takes hard work and dedicated effort.

I am a registered Independent and a Los Alamos County resident for over 48 years. What I want from my County Council are smart, honest, hard-working individuals who have a goal of providing a good quality of life for their constituents and neighbors.

Denise Derkacs is definitely one of those people. She has my vote!
