FIRST BORN NEWS RELEASE

The First Born Program of Los Alamos is offering a free Breastfeeding Basics Class from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Mar. 15 in-person and via Zoom. The instructor is First Born Program Lactation Counselor Kelly Vallejo, MSW, CLC.  

In-person participation is limited to 10 at the First Born office. To register, please e-mail welcome@firstbornla.org with your name, address and phone number.  

The goal of this class is to prepare you for breastfeeding during the first few weeks. We will learn what’s within normal limits and what is not, as well as general basics such as when to call for help and when to see your pediatrician. You will also meet other Los Alamos soon to be parents and receive a gift bag of breastfeeding resources and gear. Partners are encouraged to attend. This is a group effort. Partners are important! 

The class will cover: 

● how breastfeeding works 

● the supply and demand cycle 

● the mechanics of a good latch 

● what to expect the first few weeks with your baby 

● time for your questions and concerns 

The class will be repeared monthly on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 5:30pm. 

To minimize risk to pregnant individuals, we require everyone to wear a face covering for in person events while indoors.

The First Born Program of Los Alamos is a free and voluntary home visiting program for all first time families in Los Alamos. The program is relationship-centered and curriculum-based. Families who participate receive support, information about pregnancy, early childhood development, health, nutrition and safety and learn fun activities to help build brain development and learning. Through weekly home visits, families identify personal goals, recognize challenges and opportunities for growth and build a healthy, loving, playful relationship with their child.
