The Los Alamos Hilltoppers swimmers and divers hosted 12 teams and nearly 290 athletes Dec. 3-4 for the 6th Annual Bill Hudson Memorial High School Invitational at Larry Walkup Aquatic Center. The Toppers won both the girls and boys team competition.
(Bill Hudson, an Iwo Jima veteran, established the Los Alamos High School swimming team in fall 1955 and set up the first state high school meet in 1956. He also was the founder of the Los Alamos Triathlon, one of the first triathlons in the country.)
The Los Alamos girls and boys teams each won eight of 12 events.
The girls team scores were Los Alamos 620, Farmington 317, Santa Fe 208, Taos 206, Piedra Vista 205, St Pius X 185, Santa Fe Prep 146, Belen 81, Los Lunas 81, Cottonwood Classical Prep 73, Valencia 16, and Miyamura 2.
The boys team scores were Los Alamos 629, Farmington 393, St Pius X 247, Taos 217, Belen 184, Cottonwood Classical Prep 146, Santa Fe 84, Santa Fe Prep 59, Piedra Vista 55, Los Lunas 49, and Valencia 9.
Meet records were broken in 15 of 24 events; 12 of those records were bettered by Los Alamos, including all six relays.
The Wetteland sisters combined for four wins for the girls. Senior Kelly took the 200 free (1:57.82) and 100 back (1:01.35); soph Anna grabbed back-to-back victories in the 100 fly (1:00.18) and 100 free (54.07).
Ninth-grader Sophia Pieck picked up the state 200 free standard with her 2:04.79 second place finish.
Senior Annie Beus won the 1m diving competition for the Hilltoppers with 198.80 points, beating out divers from Farmington, Santa Fe Prep and Piedra Vista.
Orion Henderson won the 200 IM and 500 free easily. He was named High School All-America in those events last season.
Junior Ming Lo qualified for the state meet in the two “short-axis” events, the 100 fly and the 100 breaststroke.
The Topper 400 freestyle relay quartet of Duncan Henderson, Andy Corliss, Matias Rougier, and Orion Henderson scorched the field, slicing through the water in 3:19.11, a Hudson meet record by 11 seconds.
Topper seniors Orion Henderson and Kelly Wetteland will travel to Austin, Texas, later this week to participate in the Junior Nationals, where they will race in a full complement of events against some of the nation’s best up-and-coming swimmers. Henderson has signed a National Letter of Intent to compete for the University of Arizona Wildcats; Wetteland has committed to compete for Navy.
