Robert Mayerhofer, 101, long-time resident of Los Alamos passed away at Aspen Ridge Lodge Assisted Living Center on Saturday, Oct. 9, 2021.

Robert was born and grew up in the Steiermark province of Austria on a farm near Irdning. After Austria was annexed by Germany in 1938, he was drafted into the German military. He served in several European theaters as a truck driver for the German Luftwaffe. In 1945, while retreating from the Russian front, he was taken prisoner by the British in Denmark and returned to the Steiermark. While working in the little alpine town of Rottenmann, he met and married Maria Hecker, widowed during the war when her husband did not return from the Russian front. Their daughter, Annemarie was born in 1950. They lived in Rottenmann with two stepsons, Johann and Siegfried, until the family emigrated to Cleveland, Ohio in 1956. 

He worked in various construction businesses in Cleveland until he retired to Los Alamos in 1980, where he spent the rest of his life

Robert is preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Maria Mayerhofer, son, Franz Pichler, and stepson, Johann (John) Hecker. He is survived by his daughter, Anne Ryder and husband Richard, her daughter Christine Bullock, and great-grandchildren Alex and Dimitri Bullock; stepson, Siegfried (Sig) Hecker and wife Nina, their daughters Lisa Hecker, Linda Oliver, Lori Kosty, and Leslie Tullos, and great-grandchildren Noah and Ava Kosty, and Colette Tullos; his daughter-in-law, Annemarie Pichler and granddaughters Marion, Susi, Nicole, and Lydia and their extended families in Austria; Isabelle Szidik and Sonija Scavuzzo, daughters of stepson John Hecker, and their extended families. He is also mourned by the Haeusler family, Franz and Gerti with children, on the farm in the Steiermark where he grew up.
