Los Alamos County Council Chair Randall Ryti is headed to Glasgow, Scotland to attend the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) which runs from Oct. 31 – Nov. 12.

“I am excited for the opportunity to represent Los Alamos County as an official observer at COP26 through our membership in the Coalition of Sustainable Communities New Mexico. I hope to get information on energy use and resiliency measures that have been successful elsewhere and those that look to be promising for application in the County,” Ryti told the Los Alamos Reporter Sunday.

Others attending from New Mexico include Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and members of her cabinet including Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department Sec. Sarah Cottrell Propst.

The goals of COP26 are: to secure global net zero by mid-century and keep 1.5 degrees within reach; adapt to protect communities and natural habitats; mobilize finance; and work together to deliver. It is hoped to finalize the Paris Rulebook, which is the detailed rules that make the Paris Agreement operational, and accelerate action to tackle the climate crisis through collaboration between governments, businesses and civil society.
