LANL Plans To Test Explosives During Week Of Oct. 8

Residents of Los Alamos, White Rock, and the surrounding area are advised that Los Alamos National Laboratory plans to conduct explosives testing late Sunday, Tuesday, and Friday nights, Oct. 10-15.

The planned tests will not involve nuclear materials and will be conducted entirely on-site following all appropriate safety precautions. A brief loud boom may be heard in surrounding communities, but the planned tests pose no threat to public safety.

Los Alamos National Laboratory conducts explosives testing periodically as a part of its national security mission, which includes weapons safety, industrial explosives safety, explosives science, shock physics, global security, counterterrorism, and operational support for the military. Similar tests have helped researchers better understand how sounds travel during different atmospheric conditions, for example.
