CAMPAIGN NEWS RELEASE

Former Municipal and Magistrate Judge and current Treasurer’s Office Executive Heather Benavidez today announced her candidacy for the Democratic primary for New Mexico State Treasurer. If elected, Heather would have the distinction of being the first woman elected to this statewide office.

“I have the experience and work ethic to make sure that the Treasurer’s Office is investing in our future, by investing in our people. I have dedicated my life to public service, and above all else as Treasurer, I will protect and grow our state funds just like every single New Mexican works to protect and grow the finances in their own households,” Benavidez said. “New Mexicans deserve continued advocacy at the Treasurer’s Office, and as we kick off this campaign, I will prove, one voter at a time, that I am the best choice to continue working on their behalf.”

Benavidez grew up in Belen and holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Public Administration from the University of New Mexico. She has served New Mexicans for 18 years on the local and state level, as an employee for the 13th Judicial District, being elected two terms as municipal judge for the City of Rio Communities and being appointed by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham in 2018 to serve as Magistrate Court

judge. She starts the race with the support and endorsement of current State Treasurer Tim Eichenberg.

“Heather had the responsibility of launching the ABLE program, which since its inception has helped hundreds of New Mexicans living with disabilities achieve the respect and financial dignity that we all deserve. She understands the position and what it takes to be successful. Voting for Heather is voting for continued advocacy from the Treasurer’s Office for New Mexico families,” outgoing State Treasurer Tim Eichenberg added.

Benavidez will hold a campaign kick-off event in Albuquerque on Saturday, August 28th. The outdoor event will follow current state guidelines and protocols for COVID-19.
