Encourage your kids to get outside this month with youth programs from the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC). Starting on Monday, July 5, PEEC’s popular Nature Playtimes will resume. Plus, join PEEC for its weekly half-day camp, Forest Explorers, every Wednesday this month!
Nature Playtimes meet every Monday from 10 – 11 a.m. outside the Los Alamos Nature Center. The program provides an opportunity for toddlers, preschoolers and their caregivers to come to the nature center and explore the natural world with PEEC’s educators. Each Playtime features a craft, story and outside activity. Come join the fun outside with other local parents and children! Thanks to the LANL Foundation for funding this program.
Nature Playtime is an all-outdoor program and will be canceled in case of inclement weather. All attendees ages 3 and up who are not fully vaccinated must wear a mask. PEEC encourages frequent hand washing and asks participants to save their snacks until after the program. All participants are required to sign in when arriving at this event.
In addition to the resumption of Nature Playtimes, PEEC is hosting another session of its half-day camp, Forest Explorers, on Wednesdays throughout July. This 3-hour drop-off program provides the opportunity for kids to go on hikes from the nature center for self-directed play in the canyons, creeks and surrounding forest. Children will build forts, make observations and learn to identify local plants and animals. The club will meet from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. on July 7, 14, 21 and 29 (for a total of four sessions). Participants must be entering grades 1, 2 or 3 in the fall of 2021. Learn more and register here!
PEEC was founded in 2000 to serve the community of Los Alamos. It offers people of all ages a way to enrich their lives by strengthening their connections to our canyons, mesas, mountains and skies. PEEC operates the Los Alamos Nature Center at 2600 Canyon Road, holds regular programs and events and hosts a number of interest groups from birding to hiking to butterfly watching. The Los Alamos Nature Center is currently closed due to COVID-19, but there are many ways to learn about nature and interact with PEEC online. PEEC activities are open to everyone; however, members receive exclusive benefits such as discounts on programs and merchandise. Annual memberships start at $35.
