STATE AUDITOR’S OFFICE NEWS
State Auditor Brian Colón is once again urging New Mexicans to be aware of fraudsters exploiting the COVID-19 pandemic. The Office of the State Auditor (OSA) together with the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions (DWS) issued a joint risk advisory providing guidance, for individuals and employers, on action they can take to protect themselves from being a victim of identity theft related to fraudulent unemployment insurance claims.
“A fraudster’s worst enemy is a prepared and knowledgeable community.” said Auditor Colón. “Individuals do not need to be unemployed to be a victim of unemployment insurance fraud. Employers can have a full staff and fall victim to false claims. Once your identity is compromised resolution takes time. By investing a few minutes to educate yourself now you will save a lot of aggravation down the road should you become a victim. We have provided actionable steps New Mexicans can take to protect themselves. Be proactive and protect yourself.”
New Mexicans concerned about potential instances of governmental waste, fraud, and abuse should contact the OSA. Reports may be made anonymously through our website at www.saonm.org or by calling 1-866-OSA-FRAUD. You may also speak to an investigator by calling 505-476-3800.
