CAMPAIGN NEWS

New Mexico State Auditor Brian Colón on Thursday officially announced his candidacy for Attorney General.

“I’m running for Attorney General to continue my lifelong work standing up for New Mexicans as the people’s lawyer. As State Auditor, I’ve protected our children and families, rooted out fraud, waste, and abuse, and held elected and public officials accountable when they break the law and abuse the system. As Attorney General, I will combat sexual and violent predators, attack gun violence, stomp out fraudulent schemes that target seniors and veterans, and prosecute greedy corporations that break the rules,” said Auditor Brian Colón. “Right now, more than ever, New Mexicans need someone they trust to fight for them.”

Colón continues to protect children and families across the state, including holding elected officials accountable for their abuse of power and taxpayer funds, investigating Albuquerque Police for excessive overtime pay and lavish purchases, standing up for COVID patients and native communities by taking on the financial abuse and mismanagement of Rehoboth McKinley Christian Health Care Services in Gallup, and protecting our most vulnerable by overhauling the broken guardian and conservatorship system in New Mexico.

“Like so many children in New Mexico, I grew up in poverty. I lost my father as a teenager, and so while I was the first in my family to go to college, and then law school, I also served as a protector for my mother, little brother and sister,” continued Colón. “I’ll bring that same determined commitment to every family in New Mexico – because I know what a difference it can make when you have someone fighting for you.”

Raised in Valencia County and Albuquerque, Colón’s commitment to New Mexico families runs deep. Over two decades, he has dedicated his life to helping cultural and community-focused nonprofits raise money and has assisted hundreds of New Mexico youth to find the right jobs and careers for their futures. Brian has been called a “force” because of his ability to inspire others to get involved.

Colón graduated from New Mexico State University with a bachelor’s degree in Finance and went on to earn a law degree from the University of New Mexico School of Law. Brian has been named Outstanding Young Lawyer of the Year by the State Bar of New Mexico, served on the New Mexico Hispanic Bar Association’s Board of Directors since 2001, and was twice appointed by the New Mexico Supreme Court as a Commissioner for the Judicial Selection Commission. Colón also served as the Chairman of the Democratic Party of New Mexico and won two decisive statewide Democratic primaries and a general election.

For more than 24 years, Brian has been married to Aleli Colón, an educator at Van Buren Middle School in Albuquerque’s International District. Their son, Rafael, is a graduate of Albuquerque High School, recently completed a biomedical engineering degree, and works at a local biomedical engineering firm in Albuquerque.
