LAPS FOUNDATION NEWS

Los Alamos Public Schools Foundation always looks for opportunities to help support our school staff, especially this year with so many operational changes.  We want to use the generous donations from our community to make a difference and positively impact our schools for a successful year of learning in 2020-2021.  We are focused on flexibility this year and meeting needs of the school district as they arise in this school year of unknowns.

One way our board gets feedback about what is needed in the schools is by having “Teacher Advisory Dinners” several times a year.  Our “dinner” in September was a bit different with take-out meal deliveries and an online discussion but nevertheless, we learned a lot from teachers who are working directly with students and know about all the challenges.  A teacher from Los Alamos Middle School got feedback from her colleagues and reported many wanted standing desk options because sitting in front of a computer teaching online all day was difficult.  So far LAPS Foundation has purchased 17 standing desks and 7 laptop stands for the middle school.

We have received many thanks from grateful LAMS staff.  Brent Collum commented, “The standing desk is a big help ergonomically, and I get a better view of the multiple screens I am monitoring during class meets.  In the week since I’ve been using the standing desk, I haven’t used my chair.” Several staff members also observed the physical benefits they’ve experienced from being able to stand periodically rather than sit all day.

LAPS Foundation loves to help school staff have a better day and be able to do their jobs better.  Our mission is to serve as the connection between our community and school district, evaluating needs and investing resources to improve the quality of public education in our community.
