In America, the democratic process cannot be curtailed because of a virus. Each of us still has the right and responsibility to choose our leadership through an informed vote. The Los Alamos League of Women Voters recently held three online forums for all candidates with opposition in the June 2 primary. You can access all of these forums at http://lwvlosalamos.org 

Here are the forums available for viewing:

• Wednesday, April 29: The seven Congressional District 3 Democratic candidates for Congressional District 3, the seat currently held by Rep. Ben Ray Luján, who is running for the Senate seat being vacated by our long-term Senator Tom Udall.

• Thursday, April, 30: The four Republican candidates running for Congressional District 3.

• Monday, May 4: Candidates with opposition in the primary for Los Alamos County Council, State Senate District 5, District Attorney for the 1st Judicial District, and Public Regulatory Commission District 3.

For additional information before you vote, you may access the 2020 Primary Voter Guide to find out who is running and their views on important issues. Visit http://lwvlosalamos.org  This Primary Voter Guide was included in the Los Alamos Daily Post recently, and will be distributed around the town.

You can go to https://www.sos.state.nm.us/voting-and-elections/voter-information/ to check if you are registered to vote, and whether your party affiliation is correct so that you are eligible to vote in the primary. Only voters registered as Democrats, Republicans, or Libertarians are eligible to vote in this primary. Primary election day in New Mexico is Tuesday, June 2.   We recommend voting by absentee ballot, but if you wish to vote in person, the polls will open on May 5 in the Municipal Building.

For a hundred years the League of Women Voters has been working to educate voters about candidates and issues. For every election the Los Alamos League has held forums so that voters can meet candidates, hear their positions, and understand how government works. The COVID-19 pandemic has impeded voters from meeting the candidates face-to-face. Nevertheless, the LWV continues its unceasing commitment to informing voters.
