Abert squirrels are out an about at Bandelier National Monument. Although the visitor center, bookstore, campgrounds and Sirphey are closed, the trails remain open with visitors asked to observe the COVID-19 guidelines for social distancing and groups of no more than five people. The Abert squirrels have been very active lately around Bandelier National Monument. Interestingly, there are nine subspecies, some with gray coats like the ones at Bandelier, others with black or brown coats. Some even have a red stripe down their back! All species are easy to recognize because of their tufted ears (though some lose the tufts from July to September). Photo Courtesy NPS
