Catches of the week

Fenton Lake: Robert Padilla of Albuquerque caught a 21-inch rainbow trout using an ice fishing jig tipped with a mealworm Feb. 8.

Tiger Park Pond (Aztec): E Maldonado Trejo of Barcelona, Spain caught a 22-inch rainbow trout using a purple leech fly Feb. 7.

The following reports came in late, but are definitely worth mentioning:

Eagle Nest Lake: John Hamilton, of Lubbock, Texas, caught a 20.5-inch rainbow trout ice fishing using a white and pink jig with mealworms, jigging off the bottom in 15 to 18-feet of water Feb. 1.

Estancia Park Lake: Ethan Layman, age 8, of Albuquerque caught three rainbow trout 12 to 14-inches using corn with a fireball Jan. 28.

San Juan River: Tyler Savell of Farmington caught a 23-inch rainbow trout fishing above the Texas Hole using a size 24 midge larvae fly Feb. 2.

Northeast Fishing Report

Cabresto Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Charette Lakes: The lake is closed to fishing and boating until March 1, 2020.

Cimarron River: Stream flow near Cimarron Monday morning was not measured due to ice. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Clayton Lake: The lake is closed to fishing and boating until March 1, 2020.

Conchas Lake: Fishing for walleye was fair using green grubs.

Costilla Creek: Stream flow near Costilla Monday was not measured due to ice. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Cowles Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Coyote Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eagle Nest Lake: The lake is open for ice fishing. Fishing for trout was good using small ice fishing jigs, spoons and PowerBait. Fishing for perch was good using Swedish Pimple jigs tipped with mealworms. We had no reports on other species.

Eagle Rock Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Fawn Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Gallinas River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Hopewell Lake: The gate to the camping area is closed. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Alice: The lake is open for ice fishing with ice reported at 11-inches thick. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Maloya: The lake is open for ice fishing with ice reported at 17-inches thick. Fishing for trout was good using dough bait.

Los Pinos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Maxwell Lake 13: The lake is closed to fishing and boating until March 1, 2020.

Monastery Lake: The lake is closed due to a thin layer of ice on the lake.

Morphy Lake: The lake is closed for a renovation project on the dam and no firm opening date has been set.

Pecos River: Stream flow near the town of Pecos Monday morning was 24.0 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Red River: Stream flow below the hatchery Monday morning was 43.2 cfs. Fishing for trout was fair using salmon eggs.

Rio Grande: Stream flow at the Taos Junction Bridge Monday morning was 478 cfs. Fishing for trout was good using nymph flies.

Rio Hondo: Stream flow Monday morning near Valdez was not measured due to ice. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Mora: Stream flow Monday morning was 4.78 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco Monday morning was not measured due to ice. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Cruz Reservoir: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Shuree Ponds: The ponds are closed. Fishing is open on the Valle Vidal, including Shuree Ponds, July 1-Dec. 31.

Springer Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Storrie Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Stubblefield Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Ute Lake: Fishing for white bass and walleye was slow to fair jigging in 50 to 60-feet of water. The surface water temperature was 42 degrees Fahrenheit and the main lake was clear.


Northwest Fishing Report

Abiquiu Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Due to low water levels anglers are advised to use four-wheel drive vehicles to launch boats and watch for obstructions on the water.

Animas River: Water flow below Aztec Monday morning was 209 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Albuquerque Area Drains: Fishing for trout was fair to good using worms and salmon eggs.

Bluewater Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. The winter trout stocking plan is to stock 6000 catchable size rainbow trout per month from November through March.

Brazos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Canjilon Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Chama River: Monday morning flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 102 cfs and 76.7 cfs respectively. Fishing for trout below El Vado Lake was fair to good using small spinners and worms. We had no reports from below Abiquiu Lake.

Anglers should expect seasonal closures on the Rio Chama below Abiquiu Dam until March as a fish habitat improvement project is currently underway. Cochiti Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

El Vado Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Fenton Lake: The lake is open for ice fishing with ice reported at 13-inches thick. Fishing for trout was good using ice fishing jigs tipped with mealworms. Please remember that only two cutthroat trout are allowed to be harvested per day within the regular five-fish limit.

Heron Lake: The lake is open for ice fishing with ice reported at 10-inches thick. Fishing for kokanee salmon was fair to good using jigs tipped with fireballs.

Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez near the town of Jemez Monday morning was 21.8 cfs. Fishing for trout was good below Battleship Rock using worms, salmon eggs, Copper John flies, orange egg pattern flies and mop flies.

Laguna del Campo: Currently closed. Open May 1 to Oct. 1.

Lagunitas Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Farmington: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Manzano Lake: Fishing for trout was good using salmon peach PowerBait.

McGaffey Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Navajo Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

San Gregorio Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

San Juan River: Stream flow Monday morning was 397 cfs. Fishing for trout in the quality waters was fair to good using size 24 and size 26 black, olive and grey midge pattern flies, size 22 red larva, chocolate emergers and size 12 streamers. Fishing for trout in the bait waters was fair to good using egg patterns and pheasant tail nymph flies.

Seven Springs Brood Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Tingley Beach: Fishing for trout was good using garlic yellow PowerBait and PowerBait Mice Tails.

Tiger Park Pond: An angler reported catching a 22-inch trout using a purple leech fly.

Trout Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.


Southwest Fishing Report

Alumni Pond: Fishing for trout was good using nymph flies, worms and salmon peach PowerBait.

Bear Canyon Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bill Evans Lake: The Department will be conducting a habitat improvement project Feb. 11 through Feb. 14. The road to the north side of the lake will be closed to the public during this time. The south side of the lake, including the boat ramp, will remain open.

Caballo Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Elephant Butte Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Escondida Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Gila River: Stream flow Monday morning was 142 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Glenwood Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Roberts: Fishing for trout was fair to good using nightcrawlers.

Percha Dam: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Quemado Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rancho Grande Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Grande: Stream flow below Elephant Butte Monday morning was .57 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Snow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Trees Lake: Fishing for trout was very good using garlic green and rainbow PowerBait.

Young Pond: Fishing for trout was fair to good using corn, worms, marshmallows and rainbow PowerBait.

Bonito Lake: Closed until further notice by the city of Alamogordo due to fire damage. It appears now that the lake will be out of commission until 2022.
