The Los Alamos Nature Center’s planetarium has something coming up everyday this weekend! Discover how scientists measure the age of the Earth on Friday evening, watch the beautiful film “National Parks Adventure” on Saturday afternoon and learn more about the total lunar eclipse on Sunday afternoon before viewing it on Sunday night.
On Friday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m., Galen Gisler will discuss the history of mankind’s speculations, ideas, theories and measurements concerning the age of our planet. Scientific measurements put the age of our Earth at 4.6 billion years old, but how do scientists know this? Audience members will learn how we measure the ages of objects that exist much longer than our lifetimes at this talk and are sure to discover something new about our home planet.
Rick Wallace will also give a talk on Sunday, Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. about the evening’s total lunar eclipse, which will be visible to everyone in North America. Join Wallace to learn about the specifics of this lunar eclipse and how to view it in the evening. Audience members will also learn how the Sun, Earth and Moon cause different types of eclipses and how to photograph the eclipse. A group will gather at Overlook Park in White Rock on Sunday evening at about 8:30 p.m. to watch the lunar eclipse go through its partial phase.
In addition to these two talks, the nature center will show the full-dome film “National Parks Adventure” on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 2 p.m. This beautiful film explores incredible stories, adventures and views of our nation’s park. It was brought to Los Alamos thanks to CB Fox, Metzger’s Hardware and The Delle Foundation with additional funding from Manhattan National Historical Park.
Seating is limited for both the talk and movie, so please call the nature center at 505-662-0460 or stop by to reserve tickets. Admission for Galen Gisler’s talk and “National Parks Adventure” is $6 for adults and $4 for kids. The lunar eclipse talk is free, but seating is still limited and individuals are encouraged to reserve their tickets in advance. Events in the planetarium are not recommended for children under age 4.
